In storage and commissioning areas, carriers with products are often kept in blocks on the floor. In order to retrieve products of a certain type or production date, the position of each single carrier must be monitored and stored in the warehouse management software.
By continuously tracking products during every handling operation, each batch delivered is automatically precisely identified without (re-)scanning any carriers before loading it on the truck.
Avoided scanning time and an efficient operation without searching a product or a destinct batch provides cost savings. Transport orders can be assigned to the best positioned vehicle to minimize empty travel with reduced forklift usage. For the food industry, compliance with given traceability regulations (EU 178/2002) is a welcome side-effect.
LPR sensors on forklift trucks and other commissioning vehicles
On buildings, fences, columns or light poles, transponders can be installed as reference marks with approximately 400 m range. A base station on the forklift computes the position, orientation and speed of the vehicle.
At the time of picking up or unloading a carrier, the respective position is provided in real-time to the warehouse management system. For commissioning or shipping, any item picked up by a forklift is automatically identified due to its storage position. Scanning of a barcode or RFID is no longer required.
Inventory data is constantly up-to-date, avoiding any efforts for further inventory taking.
Storage areas can be any size, indoor and/or outdoor. Ambient conditions do not affect LPR position readings.
