HD Imaging Radar – Innovative SAR technology for industry

We are your partner for radar sensor technology and strive to make technologies accessible for industrial applications. With our research and development in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), we designed HD Imaging Radar, an innovation on which we can collaborate with you to enhance safety, efficiency, and intelligence of processes in industry and logistics.

After years of intensive research, we are now at the point where the technical challenges of HD Imaging Radar technology have been overcome and we are moving into concrete product development. This is a breakthrough in the development of industrial radar technology that offers completely innovative solutions for numerous fields of application.

HD Imaging Radar in the ports sector

What is HD Imaging Radar?

HD Imaging Radar is based on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and enables the generation of detailed images of objects and environments. By emitting radar signals and capturing and analyzing the reflected signals with a moving antenna, high-resolution images can be produced. While the system is moving, for example because it is mounted on a vehicle or a satellite, a virtual antenna (“synthetic aperture”) is simulated. This enables a higher resolution than with a single, physical antenna, as a large number of radar echoes are collected and processed into a high-resolution image.

In contrast to conventional radar systems, which mainly measure distances, HD Imaging Radar offers the ability to detect structures in high resolution. With HD Imaging Radar, Symeo aims to combine the reliability of radar sensors with the high resolution of laser scanners. Optical sensors such as laser sensors or cameras are to be replaced where dust or weather influences are too much of a problem.

HD imaging radar will prove valuable in challenging environments where visibility is impaired by fog, dust or glare.

Track monitoring with HD Imaging Radar

Advantages of HD Imaging Radar

  • High spatial resolution: HD Imaging Radar generates high-resolution images that provide detailed information about the surroundings.
  • Real-time monitoring: HD Imaging Radar provides data in real time, enabling rapid responses to problems as they arise.
  • Independence from lighting conditions: Unlike optical sensors such as laser sensors or cameras, HD Imaging Radar works reliably in all weather and light conditions.
  • Robustness: Radar is insensitive to the effects of vibrations, dust, dirt or other environmental conditions.
  • Privacy protection: Unlike cameras, HD Imaging Radar does not capture detailed visual data that could be used to identify people.
  • Variety of applications: HD Imaging Radar offers a wide range of applications – from monitoring production processes and infrastructure to modeling terrain and storage areas to obstacle detection.

Potential fields of application in industry

HD Imaging Radar technology offers considerable advantages for various industrial applications due to its high-resolution 3D real-time imaging and its resistance to different environmental conditions.

Crane monitoring

  • Precise monitoring of environments by mounting HD Imaging Radar on automatic stacking cranes (ASC), ship-to-shore cranes (STS), rubber-tyre gantry cranes (RTG) and overhead cranes
  • Detailed environmental views using side-view applications for straddle carriers, reach stackers and RTG cranes

Ports / Container Terminals / Logistics Centers

  • Container yard modeling and container movement monitoring for efficient and safe operations
  • Precise environment mapping for navigation through complex and dynamic spaces in ports and logistics centers using side-view applications for straddle carriers, reach stackers, and RTG cranes
  • Collision avoidance through obstacle detection
  • Monitoring danger zones and safeguarding people working alongside automated and semi-automated machinery

Steel mills

  • Tracking and identification of materials such as steel blocks, coils or slabs in real-time
  • Mapping and identification of storage locations, for example for slabs and coils

Infrastructure / Railway

  • Monitoring the surrounding vegetation to ensure a free clearance profile along the route
  • Monitoring infrastructure: rails, track bed, overhead lines
  • Monitoring the condition of bridges and tunnels
  • Surrounding area monitoring and early hazard detection, for example due to broken wood or landslides

Surface mining / Bulk material

  • Monitoring of conveyor belts: volume, speed, blockages
  • Bulk material handling: volume measurement in silos, bunkers and stockpiles
  • Machine control and automation based on bulk material data in real time
