Press release: highly-precise positioning for bus depots1,200 buses in Düsseldorf and Hamburg equipped with Symeo positioning solutions
Neubiberg (Germany), August 14, 2014 – The Hamburger Hochbahn AG and Düsseldorfer Rheinbahn AG, two of Germany's major public transportation operators, are currently using the Symeo positioning technology in several of their depots. The LPR®-2D technology, which consists of a receiver, the so-called Symeo Positioning Unit (SPU), installed on the vehicle, plus fixed location reference markers, is being used to track more than 1,200 buses. This allows radio-based, automatic positioning of fleet vehicles, even down to a specific parking location, without using or interfering with existing WLAN data networks. When the vehicles are put into service, the radio sensors can also be used for GPS positioning. The fault-tolerant and reliable Symeo products can be used indoors as well as outdoors. Symeo will be presenting its highly-precise positioning solutions for local public transportation fleets at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin from September 23 to 29, 2014 (hall 2.1, exhibit booth 104).
The Hamburger Hochbahn AG and the Düsseldorfer Rheinbahn AG have been utilizing Symeo's LPR®-2D radar-based technology for the past 12 and 18 months to monitor and record the parking position of several hundred buses in each depot. The position coordinates are automatically forwarded to the depot management system. The Symeo positioning technology, together with a new depot management software from PSI Transcom GmbH, has been installed at the Hochbahn depots in Hummelsbüttel, Mesterkamp, Harburg and Wandsbek, in addition to the Rheinbahn depots in Lierenfeld and Heerdt.
"Before we installed the Symeo technology, someone had to search for and manually record the position of the buses. This effort has now been eliminated since the system automatically determines where the buses are parked. Our depot operations have been optimized as a result. The products were easy to install and function very reliably," says Dr. Heinrich Böse, area manager responsible for system planning and technology at the Hamburger Hochbahn AG.
Low-cost, interference-free positioning
The highly-precise indoor positioning requires only a few components, including LPR®-2D receivers installed on the vehicles. For location reference the system relies on transponders, which do not have to be interconnected. The receivers determine the position of the vehicles without accessing a central server.
The position and vehicle data is then transmitted over the LPR® data channel to a Symeo wireless data collection point using a 5.8 GHz proprietary frequency, without interfering with existing WLAN networks for the exchange of operating data: “The wireless networks in our depots are fully occupied. We are therefore pleased to have this separate, self-sufficient data link, which provides us easy and fast data transmission”, says Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Klein, project manager at the Rheinbahn AG. If required, the data can also be transmitted via mobile phone or WLAN networks however.
The plan is to have all major Hamburger Hochbahn AG and Düsseldorfer Rheinbahn AG depots equipped with the Symeo positioning technology by the time the project is completed in 2015.
