Press release: Symeo and ÖBB continue successful cooperationSymeo delivers new energy measurement and positioning system "railpower box mini"
Neubiberg (Germany), September 08, 2016 – Smaller, more compact, lighter: the new energy measurement system "railpower box mini", which Symeo jointly developed with and for ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, can now capture rail vehicle energy usage and positioning data with even less space. Measuring only 280x210x102.7 mm, the volume of the innovative power meter and telemetry system is twice as small as of its predecessor "railpower box", which has already been sold more than 1.200 times across Europe. ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG received the first railpower box mini systems in a total of 8 units. The railpower box and the railpower box mini are marketed through ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.
With the railpower box mini, Symeo GmbH, specialist for radar and GNSS positioning and wireless data management, and Austrian National Railway's ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, the country's largest mobility provider, are continuing their successful cooperation. The new positioning and telemetry system for regional and long-distance rail systems represents an even more compact version of the railpower box, which has been on the market since 2013.
"Several of our customers have been asking for a slimmer version of the power meter system that will take up even less space in the trains," explains Harald Jony, head of energy management at ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. As a Power Partner of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG and successful co-developer of the initial railpower box, Symeo GmbH was handed responsibility for the development, certification and production of the new railpower box mini.
More functionality in a smaller package
Like the first version, the railpower box mini complies with Europe's rail technology homologation requirements, including EN 45545, EN 50121, EN 50155 and EN 50463. Not only smaller and lighter, the new platform also comes with additional interfaces such as a second LAN port, making it even easier to integrate into existing rail vehicle systems. A USB interface also allows the data to be displayed externally with a USB Bluetooth converter.
As in the previous version, a key component of the railpower box mini is DATROS, Symeo's data handling system that monitors power consumption while reliably and precisely tracking the position of cross-border rail vehicles using GNSS (short for Global Navigation Satellite Systems GPS, Glonass and Galileo). The measurement data can be stored for up to one year.

The new power management and telemetry system will be presented during the InnoTrans trade fair in Germany (Berlin, September 20-23) and can be viewed at both the ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG exhibit booth (City Cube) and the Symeo GmbH exhibit booth (hall 2.1, booth 104). The railpower box mini is marketed through ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.
