Press release: More than 1,000 additional energy measurement and positioning systems for rail systems across EuropeÖBB and Symeo ink new framework agreement for "railpower box" and "railpower box mini"
Neubiberg (Germany), December 12, 2016 – ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, a subsidiary of Austria's largest mobility provider ÖBB, and Symeo GmbH, positioning and telemetry specialist, have signed a new framework agreement covering production of the energy measurement systems "railpower box" and "railpower box mini". The multi-million euro contract is Symeo's largest order to date from ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. The agreement calls for the manufacture of at least 1,000 additional units of the telemetry and positioning devices for European cross-border rail traffic by 2018. A new feature of the contract is the option for a pan-European on-site service agreement through Symeo GmbH.
The new contract is a follow-up to the initial framework agreement from 2014 and extends the successful cooperation between the two companies to 2018. It also contains a provision for an additional two-year extension to the end of 2020. "The new agreement strengthens the long-standing cooperation between ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG and Symeo GmbH and allows us to establish a foothold in the European rail sector," says Symeo CEO Dirk Brunnengräber. The innovative energy measurement and positioning systems were designed for and co-developed by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG and ensure cross-border power management and precise localization of railways across Europe.
High system availability
As of mid-September 2016, the railpower boxes recorded in the ÖBB system for operating hours have experienced only 3 outages since 2014 while providing more than 2 million hours of reliable service. "The extremely high availability of the railpower box was a key criterion in our decision to extend our cooperation with Symeo GmbH for a longer period. Product quality, as well as quick response times when adapting the existing systems to the needs of the customers, was also decisive," says Harald Jony, head of energy management at ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. "Given the reliability of the systems to date, we have the option in the contract to trust our Munich-based power partner with eventually providing on-site service across Europe when needed."
Developed in accordance with European rail technology interoperability standards
The railpower box and railpower box mini are one of the first energy measurement systems to comply with Europe's rail technology interoperability requirements, including EN 50463, EN 45545, EN 50121 and EN 50155. A key component is DATROS, Symeo's data handling system that monitors energy consumption while reliably and precisely tracking the position of cross-border rail vehicles using GNSS (short for Global Navigation Satellite Systems GPS, Glonass, and Galileo). The system also ensures reliable transmission of the data to the ÖBB server for billing purposes.
The railpower box and the railpower box mini are marketed exclusively through ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.
