Safe Distance Measurement with LPR®-SAFE

LPR®-SAFE is a system for safe distance measurement compliant with the functional safety standard EN ISO 13849 PLd. It is suitable for semi-automatic and automatic crane systems or rail-bound vehicles, for example.

LPR®-SAFE consists of LPR®-1DHP-291 (60 GHz) or LPR®-1D24 (24 GHz)series radar distance measurement sensors which, together with a certified function block (EN ISO 13849 PLd) on a fail-safe Siemens PLC, enable precise, functionally safe distance measurement.

Two redundant measuring sections with two sensors each, all of the same type, are set up for this purpose. Both measuring sections operate in redundant secondary radar mode ensuring that the measurement only takes place to the appropriately configured partner unit. Each of the two redundant measuring sections provides distance values, which are forwarded to a fail-safe PLC, where the measured distances are compared in the certified function block (EN ISO 13849 PLd). The measured values can be read and compared on one or both sides of the measuring section with its own PLC on each side. If the deviation of the measured distances of both sections is within the permissible tolerances, the measured values are marked as safe. If not, the measurement is marked as unsafe and corresponding actions can be triggered on the (crane) system side.

Depending on the sensor type used, different ranges and accuracies result.

LPR®-SAFE system structure for new installations

Symeo provides all devices and software modules of the LPR®-SAFE system, and the new installation is as easy as usual. The sensors of the respective measuring section are configured via WebUI. The connection to the PLC (Siemens S7 with fail-safe CPU), on which the safe function block is executed, is established on site.

LPR®-SAFE retrofit for existing Symeo measuring sections

To upgrade existing Symeo measuring sections to functionally safe LPR®-SAFE systems, we offer customized solutions that reduce the retrofitting time to a minimum.

Sensor safety with radar: What functionally safe solutions compliant with PLd does Symeo offer?

Sensor Safety in Industry: Reliable Distance Measurement with Symeo Safety Radar

In modern industrial automation, sensor safety is a crucial factor in protecting people and machinery. It refers to the targeted use of safety-oriented sensors that reliably provide data for safety-critical applications. With LPR®-SAFE, Symeo offers an innovative Safety Radar solution for functionally safe distance measurement, certified compliant to EN ISO 13849 Performance Level d (PLd). LPR®-SAFE delivers functionally safe measurement values.

What is Sensor Safety?

Sensor Safety refers to the use of specially developed sensors and sensor systems that deliver safety-critical data — such as for distance monitoring or position detection. These solutions meet strict requirements for reliability, availability, and fault tolerance, and are integrated into safety-related control circuits. The system further processes and evaluates the data to trigger appropriate safety responses.

Symeo Safety Radar: LPR®-SAFE in Detail

LPR®-SAFE is a radar-based sensor solution from Symeo designed for functionally safe distance measurement. As a Safety Radar, the system is not affected by light, dust, rain, or vibrations — making it especially suitable for industrial environments where other sensors reach their limits.

The system includes::

  • Two redundant measurement paths, each with two radar sensors
  • A certified function block (EN ISO 13849 PLd) on a failsafe Siemens PLC
  • Safe value formation via plausibility checks of redundant measurement data within the certified function block

The radar measurement operates in what’s known as secondary radar mode, in which the sensors generate distance values that are verified within the certified function block and output as safety-relevant data.

Running a functionally safe system always requires high availability — only then can unplanned downtimes be avoided and productivity ensured. Symeo achieves this with its robust and reliable sensor technology, which delivers high-quality data even under the harshest environmental conditions — enabling the reliable operation of a highly available, functionally safe positioning system.

Advantages of Symeo Safety Radar Technology

  • Very high availability even under extreme conditions such as dirt, rain, snow, or darkness
  • Resistant to shocks, vibrations, and electromagnetic interference
  • Certified compliant to EN ISO 13849 PLd
  • Ideal for long measurement ranges (up to 1000 m)
  • Maintenance-free and wear-free
  • Available as a retrofit solution for existing Symeo systems

Conclusion: Radar as the Foundation of Modern Sensor Safety Systems

With LPR®-SAFE, Symeo offers a powerful Safety Radar solution that enables functionally safe distance measurement even under difficult environmental conditions. The combination of proven Symeo sensor technology and a certified safety function block provides a solution that can be seamlessly integrated into safety-related systems — ensuring maximum operational safety with the highest availability.

Crane safety for bridge cranes: How can hazards be identified and avoided?

What are the most common hazards when using overhead cranes?

Overhead cranes are essential in industrial manufacturing, warehouse logistics, and heavy-duty material handling. However, their operation comes with significant risks. The most common hazards when using overhead cranes include:

  • Collisions with other cranes, walls, or machinery
  • Uncontrolled load movement during acceleration or deceleration
  • Load drops due to faulty slings or overloading
  • Technical failures in drives, brakes, or control systems

In industrial environments with limited space and fast-paced operations, each of these hazards can lead to serious accidents or costly production downtimes.

What does crane safety mean in the context of overhead cranes?

Crane safety for overhead cranes encompasses all measures taken to ensure safe and collision-free operation within factory halls or production facilities. This includes:

  • Collision avoidance for multiple cranes on the same track
  • Precise position monitoring to limit travel zones
  • Automatic stop or speed reduction upon obstacle detection
  • Radar-based distance measurement, such as with Symeo’s LPR-SAFE system
  • Visual assistance for operators in limited visibility conditions
  • Regular maintenance and safety inspections

Crane safety strongly depends on the sensors used, the condition of the system, and the training of the operating personnel.

Why is crane safety important for overhead cranes?

Overhead crane safety is critical for protecting people, machines, and industrial processes. In factory environments, cranes often operate close to employees and equipment — collisions or uncontrolled movements can lead to serious accidents and costly downtime. Regulations such as the German BetrSichV and DGUV mandate specific safety measures.

At the same time, a high level of crane safety improves equipment availability and enables efficient, automated workflows.

Modern safety solutions like Symeo’s LPR-SAFE system offer reliable, maintenance-free position and distance measurement — even under challenging conditions — and make a vital contribution to safe crane operation in industrial halls.
